Barbara Easterling
Barbara Easterling who will be chairing the first UNI World Women's Conference in Berlin, greets delegates. Barbara is Secretary-Treasurer of the Communications Workers of America
A lot of work still to do to create a better
life.
The importance of the historic first UNI World Women's Conference cannot be overstated. We meet at a time when women workers are shattering the so-called glass ceiling every
day.
We've made great progress in changing attitudes and policies that have historically put women and minorities at an economic and social disadvantage. Today, women work in every profession and represent one of the fastest growing segments of the labour movement.
The international labour movement has been a constant voice in the never-ending fight to eradicate gender discrimination in the workplace. While we have made progress, our quest is far from finished.Women still earn less than men. Women workers are still confronted with more workplace discrimination than any other group of workers in the world. Domestic violence against women and the growing phenomenon of trafficking in women remind us of the challenges before us.
We come together as leaders of the international trade union movement - the greatest movement for social justice and equality the world has ever known. We come together to share ideas and dreams to improve the lives of women and indeed all workers throughout the world.
I look forward to working with each of you as we strive to make life better - the ultimate goal of the labour movement. BE
