Fast track women in unions, conference told

Trade unions need to fast-track women into positions of power, the UNI World Women’s Conference was urged today (Tuesday).
The call came from one of the workshops that have been examining plans to ensure women are winners in the new economy.

Margaret Chin, Malaysia

Arlette Puraye, Belgium

Margaret Chin, from Malaysia, told of initiatives in the UNI-Asia Pacific region to attract more young women into unions - including networking with SMS messages.
"If unions want to recruit women -and young women in particular - there should be a mechanism for women to define their own agendas and their own strategies," Margaret told delegates.
"Unions have got to change their structures quickly - a pathway needs to be opened for women to get to the leadership as soon as possible."
Support came from a Spanish speaking workshop with calls for quotas on union committees

.
Haydee Lugo, Argentina

Martha Heredia from Mexico warned delegates "the Internet is not going to be the only way to overcome the gender divide in our countries".
She talked of women being the main breadwinners in developing countries and working triple shifts.
"More and more women are working 10 to 12 hours a day, then have to go home to do the housework and do any training after that – because women want to the get out of this situation."
Training and re-training in new technology is very important, said Arlette Puraye on behalf of French-speaking delegates.
Schools too need to change to improve the take up of new technology by young women.
She also warned that unions need to be vigilant in monitoring the growth of teleworking from home.
"We have to be careful to ensure that women are not relegated to home again – doing two jobs, their paid work and their home work."
Her group also called for an in-depth study of working conditions in call centres and called for a world-wide Day of Action over health protection at work.
Saeko Honda from Japan called for a digital unite not a digital divide.
"The potential of Information and Communication Technology for women is enormous," she told delegates.
The labour market is still divided into two – with men’s jobs and women’s jobs, said Maj-Len Remahl from Finland. Maj-Len is due to be elected UNI President at the end of the World Congress on Sunday.
"We have to ensure that the trade unions continue to be strong in representing the interests of our members in the new economy," she said.
