Action plan to make women winners

End of conference Cabaret for UNI Women provided by Trude Comes From Africa

An action programme to improve the position of women in the New Economy emerged from UNI’s first World Women’s Conference in Berlin.
The Conference recognised the opportunities offered by the emerging digital economy to make women winners but also warned that women will not be automatic beneficiaries from these opportunities – a lot of work needs to be done.
"The possibilities for women to expand their access to knowledge and information through the Internet are enormous but in most countries this potential is not being realised," say the conclusions. "Instead the digital divide is compounded by the gender divide."
In many areas electricity is not available let alone the Internet while globalisation has increased wealth and health divides and increased exploitation of women and children.
"The feminisation of poverty along with related scourges as the increase of trafficking in women and children, represent the darker side of the global economy.
"In the economically advantaged nations too, women workers are among those who are most likely to suffer from the negative impacts of the global reorganisation of working life.
"Women are far from having achieved equal pay and equal opportunities. There are still only a few women in leading positions, even in countries and organisations in the forefront of the fight for gender equality."
The action plan includes:

At work and in society:

  • Equal pay for work of equal value.
  • An end to segregation in employment.
  • Better access to education and training.
  • Better preventative health programmes at work.
  • Respect for the dignity of women.
  • Better sharing of tasks between men and women.

In unions:

  • Campaigning on the rights of women at work and in society.
  • Mainstreaming equal opportunity issues into all activities.
  • Measures to encourage greater participation by women in unions.
  • Leadership training for women.
  • Greater gender awareness for members and officials.
  • Greater awareness of HIV/AIDS issues and inclusion in all educational programmes.
  • Campaigning against exploitation of women.

In UNI:

  • Programmes to enhance women’s skills, representation and participation.
  • Contribute to UNI work on New Economy.
  • Gender equality incorporated into global agreements with corporations.
