Highlights

Background
Establishing gender equality is one of UNI's objectives. To support and advance the interests of women workers, UNI has promoted a better integration of women into trade union structures and activities.
Also, to strengthen unions, organising more women is of major importance. UNI advocates for gender conscious unions to make them more attractive and relevant for women. Raising gender awareness in our own trade union ranks is therefore the first step to bring about changes.

Purpose
The overall objectives of the Global Equality Project (GEP) are to contribute in the process of creating strong and large networks of women unionists taking and active part in the trade union movement at national, sub-regional and regional levels. Through education and training these women will be able to organise more women into trade unions and have a stronger voice in them as well as to promote women's rights in the struggle for gender equality and equity at all levels in the union movement and in society at large.
With the GEP, UNI intends to contribute to equipping more women in UNI-Africa, UNI-Americas and UNI-Asia & Pacific with the necessary knowledge and skills to play these roles.
The GEP further aims at sensitising and committing union to prioritise gender and equity issues and to work for equality.

Methodology
The education and training methods and techniques used in the GEP workshops are based on principles of active learning, which involves group work, case studies, discussions, role-plays, practical exercises and presentations by participants that reinforce learning.
Women union activists and leaders who took part in previous GEP seminars are invited to come and share their experience, thus serving as role models and motivating participants to follow their examples.
As a preparation, before the workshops, participants are requested, to write brief reports on political, economic and social problems faces by workers and trade unions in their countries as well as on a specific issue that will be discussed in the workshop.

Expected Impact

  • Self-confidence and competence of participants are enhanced.

  • Increased knowledge about trade unionism and gender equality and equity.

  • Participants are motivated/encouraged to transmit their knowledge to women colleagues so as to incite them to work for the improvement of the rights and conditions of women in solidarity.

  • Women's networks get extended and strengthened.

  • More women get organised and unionised.

  • Unions get strengthened and their gender awareness increases.

  • Pool of trainers and women trade union leaders has increased.

  • Affiliates review and improve collective agreements regarding issues of particular concern to women and their families.
