Immigrant workers join trade unions, Finnish UNI Commerce affiliate PAM says

Immigrant workers have a positive view about trade unions, says Anssi Vuorio, vice president of UNI Commerce affiliate PAM. He said that they are keen to join as members, particularly to benefit from the union's work with wages and working conditions. This interest toward organising even if the position of the trade union movement in the country of origin has been very poor.

Anssi Vuorio, vice president of Finland's Service Unions United (PAM)

A trade union must be able to service its immigrant members in their own mother tongue, Anssi Vuorio says. PAM has started to do this and is already in the habit of translating the central parts of collective agreements into Russian. Other materials have been produced in English and Estonian.

The biggest challenge is, according to PAM, to engage immigrant workers in union activities and in active promotion of their own rights and interests at workplaces.

Anssi Vuorio says that immigrant are still exploited in working life. The concerns raised by trade unions about temporary labour being brought to Finland after the enlargement of the European Union is well motivated, he says.

It is in everyone's interest that collective agreements on wages and working conditions are implemented. This calls for increased possibilities to be given to public authorities in their work to supervise conditions, but also for stronger rights to trade unions to intervene when exploitation is found.
