Every
day should be a day of respect Usdaw’s Freedom From Fear campaign was centre stage in the House of Commons earlier this month, when Tom Watson MP used his adjournment debate to highlight the alarming levels of violence and abuse against retail staff.
John Hannett, USDAW's deputy general secretary, presented the Freedom From Fear campaign at the UNI-Europa Commerce Conference in Stockholm. This was very well received by the delegates, who decided that the issue of violence against shop workers will be picked up with high priority also on the European level. USDAW and UNI-Europa Commerce will be working together on this project. The member for West Bromwich, East, who is leading the premier retail union's parliamentary campaign, spoke passionately about the plight of under-attack shop workers. "We have to dispel some myths about retail crime," he said. "First it is not a victimless or faceless crime. Retail crime has become an occupational hazard. Violent thieves, aggressive shoppers and abusive customers are making life a misery for retail staff. "Usdaw has rightly raised the problem of violence and abuse in the sector and has rightly called for a zero tolerance approach. Its Charter of respect for shop workers has been signed by a string of top retailers and thousands of shoppers have signed its petition calling for a safer workplace." Mr Watson urged the Government to work with Usdaw, local authorities and the police to improve safety, increase the use of information on known offenders, and help fund more crime reduction partnerships. Usdaw's plan to hold a National Respect Day, on September 17, also won support from the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Home Office Department Bob Ainsworth, who replied to the debate. "Every day should be a day of respect," he said. "If the day that is requested will help hammer home the message, it is worth supporting." Deputy General Secretary John Hannett welcomed the latest development. "This is great news for our members," he said. "We are very encouraged that this important issue is being debated at the highest level."
