Carrefour signs workers' rights agreement, employees world-wide can join trade unions

Carrefour guarantees that all its workers around the world can join the trade union of their choice. In an important agreement with Uni, the French multinational says that it will apply the fundamental international labour conventions, which give workers the right to organise and their trade unions the right to bargain collectively on their behalf.

The Carrefour agreement is unique also because it say that the company will implement it together with Uni. This means that Uni now has a formal position as a social partner in Carrefour, with the possibility to raise issues in connection with workers' and trade union rights.

In the agreement signed with Uni, Carrefour condemns child labour and forced labour, and engages itself to ensure that also suppliers respect these principles. The company has taken steps to implement this, by producing a charter which the suppliers have to respect.

The company also joined the SA 8000 organisation, following up the earlier membership of Promodes, one of the two constituent partners of the new Carrefour. SA 8000 was raised with management by Uni Commerce, at the European works council meeting of Carrefour in November last year.
