Uni Commerce and USDAW will support organising in Tesco

Uni Commerce and British affiliate USDAW will support a campaign to organise the Tesco workers in Poland. Together with the Polish trade union Solidarnosc, Tesco superstores and hypermarkets will be targeted all over the country. The organising drive will be attached to the work which is already being done in Metro, together with German affiliates DAG and HBV.

At a meeting in Manchester in the beginning of July, Jan Furstenborg and Alex Rüdig of Uni Commerce discussed the project particulars with USDAW general secretary Bill Connor and his deputy John Hannett. Activities will include a training course for organisers, where the the new and advanced organising and social partnership concept of USDAW will be applied to Polish circumstances.

With the support of USDAW, Uni-Europa Commerce will step up efforts to establish a voluntary European Works Council in Tesco, including the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. A meeting to develop this initiative further with Tesco management will be held in the near future.
