Undeterred by harassment and intimidation:
Wal-Mart workers in Canada want a voice through UFCW

Wal-Mart workers in Windsor, Canada have not been scared by the company's much publicised harassment and intimidation campaign. They have now applied to the Ontario Labour Relations Board for a vote to certify UNI Commerce affiliate UFCW as their bargaining agent. It is possible that a vote could be taken already next week, UFCW representatives told the Toronto Star. In Ontario, a vote can be taken when at least 40 per cent of the workers have signed union cards.

Today, the Wal-Mart workers in Windsor are holding a press conference to inform about their decision to unionise the store.

Just two weeks ago, Wal-Mart announced that they will close the store in Jonquière, Quebec, where the workers had voted to unionise and were preparing for collective agreement negotiations. Here, the Bentonville multinational decided to victimise close to 150 working families and to accept a further dent to its tarnished shield, rather than to allow a trade union within its doors.

Last week, 17 Wal-Mart Tire & Lube workers in Colorado succumbed to the company's scare tactics and dropped their plans to organise in UFCW.
