Wal-Mart workers
in the UK take strike action on pay and conditions
The workers in some of Wal-Mart's British distribution centres will go on strike over long running disputes on pay and employment conditions, and on the threatened closure of a depot that now employs 300 people. The first action is scheduled for 24 June, as a one day strike. Michael Hopper, Regional Organiser for the GMB where these workers are organised says that negotiations have not lead to results: - It is unfortunate that we have reached the stage where members feel there is no alternative but to resort to industrial action in this matter; although we are always willing and available to discuss the issues involved with a view to avoiding industrial action, he said. In another dispute, the union is challenging an announced closure of a Wal-Mart - Asda distribution centre in Washington, which could cost 300 workers their employment. The situation was raised by the GMB Congress last week, which decided that a plan of action would be drawn up to help save these jobs.
