Safeway boss Burd sold
company shares for 20 million USD before attacking workers health
insurance
Steven Burd, the CEO of Safeway, sold
shares for more than 20 million USD during the days and months that
preceded the American retail workers' bitter fight for affordable
healthcare. Burd has taken the lead in the employer campaign to
'wal-martize' the wages and working conditions also in that part of
retailing, where workers are now protected by collective agreements.
Burd, who is heavily criticized for Safeway's
poor management of Chicago-based supermarket chain Dominick's, is said
to look at workers' collective agreement benefits to cover the huge
losses that the chain incurred through these management shortcomings. In
1998, Burd paid 2 billion USD for Dominick's. Today, it is said that
selling the chain would probably not bring in more than one fifth of
this price, that is 400,000 USD.
Some 100,000 UFCW members in Safeway
and other leading supermarket companies are on strike since a some weeks
already, to defend their healthcare and other benefits.
Perhaps Burd counted on that this would
be a tough fight, which could not end well for him, for shareholders,
and for the company?
