Sarajevo Department Store:
Uni Commerce project courses help workers keep their jobs

The workers of a large department store in Sarajevo have all signed up for courses at the commerce trade union's training centre. The store will be completely transformed and there will be jobs only for those workers who have sufficient computer skills.

Members in the Commerce Trade Union of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the workers turned to their union offices for help. In co-operation with the Sarajevo Project Office, the union signed up all of them for basic information processing courses. Some of them are also participating in English and German language training.

The commercial workers' training centre is supported by Uni Commerce affiliates in Denmark and Norway. Altogether 700 union members in Sarajevo have completed a training programme in this centre.

Similar courses are offered by the project in Zenica in central Bosnia, where a co-operation has been established with the local commerce school. A Uni Commerce project supported by the social partners in commerce in Finland has renovated parts of the school and established a computer class.

A training centre will also be created in the Dom Sindikata in Mostar. The trade union house will be renovated within the project, supported by Uni Finance and Commerce affiliates in Sweden and Norway. Still another centre is being planned for Banja Luka.
