Carrefour has problems
with Chinese government Carrefour has run into problems with the Chinese authorities. According to Financial Times today, the company has broken against government regulations when expanding its operations in China. The second largest chain store operator in the country, Carrefour employs 16,000 people in its 27 hypermarkets. The French company may be fined by the authorities and may also have to restructure its Chinese presence. Responding to the fast growth of foreign retailers, Chinese traders are stepping up their investments. Two large retailers, Shanghai Hualian Supermarket and Beijing Xidan will merge parts of their operations and open 500 new stores in the Beijing region in the near future. China is expected to join the World Trade Organisation already during this year. There will be an important impact on retailing, as the foreign multinationals will have increased possibilities to enlarge their store networks. |
