Carrefour sells stores to Auchan

Within the framework of its merger with Promodes, Carrefour was ordered by the French competition authorities to cede a number of its stores within a one year period. The company has now announced a project to transfer 14 supermarkets and 4 hypermarkets to the competing Auchan group.

All together, the Carrefour Group is to sell off 8 hypermarkets and 26 supermarkets in France. In connection with this decision, Uni Commerce asked the French government to make sure that the stores would not be sold to Wal-Mart. This would have been counter-productive from the view of promoting free competition in the European retail sector.
