Carrefour strengthen its positions in Greece, plans to expand to Cyprus, Macedonia and Albania

Carrefour continues to expand. Last week, it announced the creation of Carrefour Marinopoulos, which will be the largest retailer in Greece. This is a fifty-fifty partnership with 125 Marinopoulos supermarkets and 8 Continent hypermarkets. The company will have 9000 employees and its sales are projected to around 1,1 Billion Euros in 2000. "The plans for openings and expected growth will sustain a significant increase in sales and results", Carrefour says.

The new company is expected to establish itself also in Cyprus, Macedonia and Albania. Uni Commerce will raise the implications of this new company structure for the European Works Council of the "New Carrefour", which is presently being negotiated.

Marinopoulos is one of the large enterprise groups in Greece. Among its operations are fifty Beauty Shops and a Marks & Spencer franchise.

Carrefour is the largest retailer in Europe and Latin America, and the first international retailer in Asia. With 680 hypermarkets, 2 260 supermarkets and 5 400 deep discount and convenience stores, the group's sales in 1999 amounted to 77 Billion Euros, in nine European countries as well as in the Americas and Asia.
