Senator Hillary Clinton
meets UFCW Board underlining the importance of the UNI affiliate Hillary Rodham Clinton, the United States Senator from New York, has met the board of UNI Commerce affiliate UFCW. Senator Clinton's visit to the board meeting in Naples, Florida, underlines the union's importance also for the US presidential campaign, that is now being launched. The recent Democratic victory in the US Congressional elections and the decline of the George W. Bush administration redefines the political scene and gives an increasing weight both to organised labour and to the Democratic Party. A leading force in the US trade union movement, UFCW has profiled itself strongly as a forceful defender of affordable health insurance for the American workers and their families. The difficult but finally successful struggle where UFCW and its members in Southern California two years ago held the line for health insurance against an all out attack by some of the country's largest retailers entered American labour history. Through the broad popular movement against Walmartization - WakeUpWalMart.com - the UNI affiliate plays a leading role in pushing the world's largest employer to abandon the exploitation of its 1.7 million strong workforce. UFCW is lead by Joe Hansen, who is also president of Union Network International UNI. Alan Spaulding, UFCW International Director, is president of UNI Commerce Global Union. The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union UFCW represents commercial and food industry workers in the United States and Canada.
