affiliate calls for Global Agreement: A failure to effectively control its suppliers has lead to heavy criticism against the leading Danish retailer Dansk Supermarked. A recent TV report showed how workers in India were encircled by chemicals fumes. - The Indian employees are treated in a way which we cannot accept, says Gert G. Torstensson, president of the trade union in Dansk Supermarked. - We demand that Dansk Supermarked produces a report every year, which describes the working conditions at suppliers. At the same time, we call on Dansk Supermarked to conclude a Global Agreement with a commitment to respect all relevant ILO Conventions, he says.
Jörgen Hoppe, president of Danish UNI Commerce affiliate HK Handel, who is also president of UNI-Europa Commerce, supports the workers' initiative: - The Global Agreements makes it more transparent, and thus also more compelling, for the enterprises to be able to show that in their day to day work they take care of the working conditions under which the goods for sale have been produced, he says. UNI Commerce has two global agreements, with Carrefour and with H&M. Several others are being discussed.
