7-Eleven in Japan
combines convenience stores with e-commerce
The convenience store giant 7-Eleven will launch an ambitious e-commerce operation in Japan. Using the network of 8,000 7-Elevn stores, 7Dream.com customers can order products over the Internet and pick them up and pay them in a shop. As the convenience stores normally trade until late at night, this will add to the pressures on traditional retailers. Ito-Yokado, which owns 7-Eleven, will
hold a majority of shares and is joined in this venture by Sony, Mitsui,
NEC, Softbank, Kinoscope, Japan Travel Bureau and Nomura Research.
The 7-Eleven chain comprises some 20,000
stores in Japan, the United States and other countries. |
