Slovenian Mercator wants
to be market leader in the region
Slovenian retailer Mercator wants to play a leading role also in many of the neighbouring countries. The company is already present in Croatia as well as in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Yesterday, Mercator opened a major shopping mall in the Croatian capital Zagreb. By the end of the year, Mercator will start building its first store in Belgrade, Serbia. This will make it the first foreign supermarket operator to establish itself in Serbia. German retail multinational Rewe is already present in Croatia, through its Austrian subsidiary Billa. Also Italian Mercatone is trading in Croatia, where French hypermarket chain Leclerc will open its first store next year. Uni Commerce is working with the commercial workers' trade unions in the region, helping them to organise in these and other large commerce enterprises.
