Metro enters e-commerce
at a limited scale only
German commerce multinational Metro will focus its e-commerce presence to wholesale trade and special offers to end consumers. In an interview for the German Financial Times, board member Zygmunt Mierdorf says that the Real hypermarkets will not go online and neither will the Praktiker do-it-yourself chain, at least for now. Metro Cash and Carry is the most international part of the German giant, generating also the major part of its profits. In July, this wholesale operation opened an Internet presence, Metro 24. Kaufhof, Metro's department store company which at present operates only in Germany will start selling gourmet products on the web. Zebralino is Metro's toy e-trader. Media Markt - Saturn, the company's profitable electronics chain, has special offers on its web site. Other Metro e-commerce initiatives include a number of portals for professional customers of its wholesale operations. These include Dayconomy and Primus Online.
