Metro enters Japan
German commerce multinational Metro will set up a cash and carry wholesale operation in Japan. The hypermarket will be the first Asian one outside China. In China, Metro has seven cash and carry markets, with the eight opening in Shanghai at the end of this month. The German company has not told how many cash and carry markets it eventually will have in Japan. Also Vietnam is on Metro's schedule. In 1998, Metro took over Makro's European cash and carry operations. There has been much talk about a take-over also of the Makro cash and carry markets outside Europe, in Latin America and Asia. |
