Metro, brief company description
|
Metro sells Divaco, opens
new cash and carry stores in Croatia
German commerce multinational Metro will sell its subsidiary Divaco. This company was formed some years ago, as a 'parking place' for parts of Metro, which the trader wanted to get rid of. These included the Vobis electronics markets, the Adler clothing stores and the Reno shoe shops, which still are part of Divaco's holdings. Metro has also announced that it continues to expand its network of cash and carry wholesale hypermarkets in Croatia. The second cash and carry opens in Zagreb this year, with further markets joining the chain next year, in Osijek, Rijeka and Split. UNI Commerce, supported by HK Norway, is engaged in a project in Croatia, helping the commerce union to organise in the multinationals which are now entering the country. A UNI Commerce meeting will be held early April, to discuss further activities, also with regard to organising the Metro cash and carry markets. In Poland, UNI Commerce affiliate Solidarnosc has been successful in establishing a strong foothold in Real, Metro's hypermarket chain. It is now starting to expand also in the Metro Cash & Carry markets. UNI Commerce meets regularly with the management of Metro AG. In this dialogue, management has assured that the company will respect local labour legislation in every country where it is operating. This means, of course, that Metro is committed to respecting the right of its workers to organise. UNI Commerce and its affiliates have, however, had to intervene with management in several cases, when country directors have not respected this policy.
