Uni Commerce and USDAW
pave the way: Together with British affiliate USDAW, Uni Commerce is actively promoting a social dialogue between Poland's Solidarnosc and Tesco. The UK retail multinational is already one of the major traders in Poland, with a growing network of hypermarkets. At a meeting in Warsaw last week, set up by Uni Commerce in co-operation with Tesco, positive contacts were established between the social partners in the company. Jan Furstenborg of Uni Commerce participated in this meeting. Previous communications problems had lead to a situation where the Polish trade union confederation was considering to take action already in December, in order to secure trade union recognition in Tesco. Tesco is one of the leading commerce enterprises, with which Uni Commerce and its affiliates enjoy constructive labour relations. USDAW, the British commercial workers' trade union, has concluded an important partnership agreement with the company, where it has more than 100,000 members. Informal discussions are continuing about the establishment of a European Works Council. This would include also the workers in Central and Eastern Europe, which is an important expansion region for Tesco. Uni Commerce has included the British retailer among the priority companies in its large organising campaign in multinationals in this region.
