Usdaw
breaks 100,000 barrier at Tesco
Shopworkers’ union Usdaw has broken through the 100,000 members barrier at Tesco, strengthening further the union’s position as the holder of the biggest section of union members in the UK. Head of recruitment strategy at Usdaw, Deputy General Secretary John Hannett said: “We’re delighted with this breakthrough. Our shopfloor reps and officials are doing a fantastic job, and with the excellent recruitment facilities provided by Tesco, our strategy is paying high dividends. “Nationally, Usdaw has increased its membership by 10,000 over the last 12 months and now has more than 318,000 members. We are the fastest growing union in the UK and I’m confident we’ll continue to grow in membership and influence. “Over the last few years, we have signed 40 new agreements and improved many others as companies realise that Usdaw can play an important role in their business. “Usdaw has also become the first trade union to set up its own organising academy which will develop a team of handpicked recruiters and equip them with the skills and expertise to maximise our true potential. “We are laying the foundations for Usdaw to go from strength to strength. I envisage a union twice our current size in the not too distant future.”
