Wal-Mart ASDA offered wage increase if workers would leave union

British UNI affiliate GMB is reacting strongly against a recent Wal-Mart attempt to bribe workers to leave their union. Last month, a court in Washington, Tyne and Wear, cited ASDA for discrimination against union members. The distribution centre workers were offered a ten per cent pay rise on the condition that they give up their union membership. The company was ordered by the tribunal to pay GBP 2,500 in compensation to each of the 340 GMB members concerned.

A meeting between GMB and ASDA has been scheduled for today, to discuss wage issues. The union says that 40,000 workers will not receive a bonus for 2005 despite the high profits that the company is making.

- Pay and condition arrangements need to be fair. The way arrangements are arrived at also need to be fair, said GMB's Jude Brimble.

- ASDA workers have no control over whether the company hits it’s overall profit target or whether this remote target is realistic. Unless they have a shop steward, they have no input into achieving store or depot targets either.

In the United Kingdoms, ASDA workers are organised in two unions, GMB and shop workers' union Usdaw.
