Toy production for Wal-Mart:
Chinese workers demanded pay, were evicted violently by security guards

Wal-Mart is once again in the news, this time for its failure to control the behaviour of a supplier. Workers at the Shuihe Electronic Factory in Dongguan in southern China were attacked by security guards, who tried to evict them when they demanded their pay. Ten workers were injured in the attack. The factory produced toys for Wal-Mart and other companies.

Last year, the formerly Hong Kong owned factory had been sold to a Taiwanese investor. When the new owner abandoned it, the factory went bankrupt. China Labor Watch in New York was quoted as saying that 1,500 workers were fired without pay on Saturday. Most of them were very poor and could not afford to get to their homes, in other provinces.

ICFTU lodged ILO complaint against China

Only a little over a week ago, the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) lodged an ILO freedom of association complaint against China for government repression against labour leaders. The charges come in 8-page ICFTU complaint against China’s government, which was lodged before the Committee on Freedom of Association of the International Labour Organisation (ILO). Under ILO rules, the Chinese government must respond to this complaint.
