Workers take Wal-Mart to
court, say company forced them to work without pay
Two former Wal-Mart workers claim that the company made them and others work extra hours without pay. They are now taking the Arkansas-based retail multinational to court, seeking compensation. The lawsuit was filed earlier this week by Diana Bell and Jennifer Heilman in a District Court in Norman, Oklahoma. It was done on behalf of workers in 85 stores in this US State. In the lawsuit, Wal-Mart is accused of having had a "clandestine scheme" to force workers to do extra hours and to work during breaks, without receiving any pay. Wal-Mart is the largest retailer in the United States and the world. Its owners, the Walton family, are among the richest people on the earth. The Oklahoma lawsuit tells a clear story about how this fortune has been created and why the company goes to great lengths to stop its workers from joining their trade union, the UFCW. |
