They had to work without pay:
Workers from 28 states are taking Wal-Mart to court

Present and former Wal-Mart workers from 28 US states are taking the Arkansas-based retail giant to court. In a class action suit, they claim that Wal-Mart has created an unofficial policy where managers demanded that workers should do overtime without pay.

This is not the first time that this practice of 'working off the clock' is raised by Wal-Mart workers, who demand their rights. Two years ago, the company had to enter a settlement when a class action suit in Colorado claimed that 69,000 Wal-Mart workers had done overtime hours without being paid for them. This cost the company 50 million US dollars.

It is through employer practices like this that Wal-Mart has grown to be the largest retailer in the world. Social dumping and ruthless behaviour against competitors and suppliers are corner stones for the company's operations. These practices are defended through an obsessive campaign to stop its workers to join UNI-Commerce affiliated UFCW.
