Social dialogue session confirms European telework agreement for commerce

Telework agreement- European Commission press release, English language

European Agreement on Guidelines for Telework in Commerce (complete text)

Uni Commerce and EuroCommerce sign telework agreement:
Equality with other workers and full trade union rights on the network

The new European telework agreement says that workers should have full trade union rights on intranets and the internet. The document which was signed in Brussels on 26 April states that teleworkers have to have equal rights and opportunities with any others in the company. It also deals with a large range of wage and benefit related issues, which must be taken into consideration when telework is introduced.

Anna Diamantopoulou (right), European commissioner for employment and social affairs, presided over the signing. Next to her, Gerassimos Zorbas of the EU Commission. Uni Commerce was represented by Jan Furstenborg (left) and Angeles Rodriguez of CCOO Spain.

Uni Europa Commerce and EuroCommerce signed the new social dialogue agreement in Brussels on 26 April. Commissioner Anna Diamantopoulou, who was present at the signing, said that the telework agreement for commerce can serve as an example also for other sectors. Both EuroCommerce and Uni Europa Commerce representatives said that signing the telework agreement is an important part of a social dialogue, which seeks to support social responsibility in European retail and wholesale trade.

After the signing (left to right): Rudi Delarue, European Commission, Bernadette Tesch-Segol, Uni-Europa, Xavier R. Durieu, EuroCommerce, Jan Furstenborg, Uni-Europa Commerce, Ray Baker, EuroCommerce and Fay Devonic, European Commission.

The telework agreement for European commerce is a strong recommendation to the social partners on national and enterprise levels. It contains detailed guidelines on how to deal with employment and labour relations issues when introducing or applying telework.

Next in line is an agreement on how to protect and support older workers in commerce. This is expected to be ready within the next few months. Negotiations have started also on an agreement, which is intended to deal with how to support weaker groups of workers.

The European Commission will issue a communication on corporate social responsibility in the near future. The European social partners for commerce will raise this communication in their dialogue, as an important element of their employment and labour relations related deliberations.
