Corporate responsibility report 2001

ISO is planning a corporate responsibility standard:
Labour relations should be regulated by social dialogue, collective agreements and the ILO, not by standards and the ISO

Corporate social responsibility is a hot issue in public discussion. As such, this is good. However, workers and trade unions need to be alert. Big business is increasingly calling for self-regulation as a way to ensure responsible behaviour towards workers and others concerned. The recent activity by the ISO, with a view of developing a corporate responsibility standard, should be seen in this light. Not surprisingly, trade unions have been excluded from the ISO process.  Full story (14.08.2002)

Strange behaviour by leading European retailers:
Pinault-Printemps-Redoute and Sainsbury's persist in denying US workers the right to be unionised

French retailer Pinault-Printemps-Redoute (PPR) is using union busting consultants to stop a largely immigrant workforce at two distribution centres from organising. British retailer Sainsbury's has top union leaders arrested, to stop them from telling workers about the benefits of membership.

These are but two recent - although extreme - examples of how well behaved European retailers can turn into beasts when given a chance outside their home markets. This Dr Jekyll - Mr Hyde act raises both eyebrows and questions. It is particularly interesting to take a look at the motives behind their action. Full story (15.08.2002)

ICFTU report reveals widespread discrimination and use of child labour in Europe

Salary discrimination against women of up to 35% still exists across Europe, according to a new report by the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU). The report highlights “pronounced gender differences in the labour market.” It also finds “unacceptable exploitation of children” occurring in most countries to some degree, “mainly in unregulated activities and in agriculture.”

Full story

Corporate social responsibility is the newest priority subject for the European social dialogue for commerce. At a session in Brussels on 23 May, trade unionists and employers exchanged views on what the approach should be when dealing with this issue. There is an established understanding  that the future of retail and wholesale trade should build on high quality services produced by a competent staff working under good conditions. (25.05.2002)

UNI-Europa Commerce vice president Jörgen Hoppe:
Corporate Social Responsibility – the vision of a sustainable society

"But what is it we are really talking about – this 'Corporate Social Responsibility?' To me it means enabling governments, companies and employees – nationally as well as internationally – to create a new world order, where all people assume responsibility for making production, consumption and social welfare work in a sustainable fashion."
