ISO
is planning a corporate responsibility standard: Corporate social responsibility is a hot issue in public discussion. As such, this is good. However, workers and trade unions need to be alert. Big business is increasingly calling for self-regulation as a way to ensure responsible behaviour towards workers and others concerned. The recent activity by the ISO, with a view of developing a corporate responsibility standard, should be seen in this light. Not surprisingly, trade unions have been excluded from the ISO process. behaviour by leading European retailers: French retailer Pinault-Printemps-Redoute (PPR) is using union busting consultants to stop a largely immigrant workforce at two distribution centres from organising. British retailer Sainsbury's has top union leaders arrested, to stop them from telling workers about the benefits of membership. These are but two recent - although extreme - examples of how well behaved European retailers can turn into beasts when given a chance outside their home markets. The Advisory Board of the Social Accountability International (SAI) met at UNI Headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland on 20 - 21 June. SAI administers the SA8000 social standard. UNI is represented on the board by Jan Furstenborg. In our picture, ILO executive director Kari Tapola (left) addresses the Advisory Board, with SAI president Alice Tepper Marlin and Board president Tom De Luca of Toys "R" Us listening. The two day meeting reviewed developments in implementing the SA8000 standard world-wide. (22 June 2002)

Commerce vice president Jörgen Hoppe: "But what is it we are really talking about – this 'Corporate Social Responsibility?' To me it means enabling governments, companies and employees – nationally as well as internationally – to create a new world order, where all people assume responsibility for making production, consumption and social welfare work in a sustainable fashion."
